[rediger] NATO redefinert
- 2003-01-15: NATO, Iraq and the German-American Waltz +
- "In five minutes, President Bush and President Havel redefined NATO’s territory of influence from a focus on Europe to a focus on the Middle East. The new mission would include protecting the alliance from the threats of terrorists and tyrants, and the degree of cooperation on engagement in Iraq would be a measuring stick of the alliance’s identity. Until just days before the summit, General Harald Kujat, the head of the NATO military council, among others, was denying that Iraq was a subject for NATO."
- "Yet in Prague, not a single ally spoke against this new stated vision statement for NATO, which one commentator at the summit paraphrased as "keep democrats in, tyrants out and terrorists down" as a substitute for NATO’s Cold War mission to "keep the Americans in, the Russians out and the Germans down."

- 2006-01-10: NATO calls for solidarity in mission in Afghanistan +
- "Britain, Canada and the Netherlands were tipped to lead the operation. But in the Netherlands, strong opposition both in parliament and among the public to additional troops deployment is prolonging an indecision process."
- "NATO foreign ministers endorsed a plan to extend the ISAF mission to the volatile south of Afghanistan."
- "Paul Bremer, who led the U.S. civilian occupation authority in Iraq after the 2003 invasion, has warned that Dutch interests in the United States will be hurt if the Netherlands opts against sending more troops to Afghanistan, Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant reported Monday."
- "I assume that from time to time decisions must be taken by the U.S. government, by U.S. Congress, which affect Dutch economic interests. It is not difficult to predict that decisions will be made that are not in the best interests of the Netherlands," said Bremer.
- "De Hoop Scheffer on Monday also reached out for help beyond the alliance, stressing that ISAF is not only a NATO affair."
- "NATO's efforts to create an environment of security and stability has to be complemented by the European Union, the Group of Eight most industrialized nations and individual donors, he said."
- "Afghanistan was one of the priorities de Hoop Scheffer defined for 2006. The other two are the Riga NATO summit, and relations with partners, like Ukraine, Russia and the Balkan states."
- "It's NATO's change; it's NATO's evolution; it's NATO having the means, the forces and the political stature and status to do what it's supposed to do in the 21st century," he said.
[rediger] 2006-01-10: "NATO will most likely expand again"
General James ("Jim") L. Jones - who serves both as the highest ranking military officer at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), NATO’s HQ, and as the commander of the United States European Command (EUCOM) - said this 2006-01-10:
- "In my personal opinion, NATO will most likely expand again.
- NATO will be more proactive and more involved in multinational joint operations.
- It will cooperate more with other international institutions, to include the United Nations.
- It will become involved in supra-interagency cooperation to face the new threats.
- Operations such as Pakistan have shown that we are not just about classical warfighting. The Alliance will leverage this ability to produce results in the less-than-war spectrum of operations."
